Haunted Kansas!

Haunted Kansas Locations - Fort Leavenworth

Ft. Leavenworth, from 1827 to present, is one of 5 military posts to reside in Kansas, and is the oldest continously operated military post west of the Mississipi. It has a wealth of legend surrounding it's ghosts, and activity that has been reported from the 1800's and still occurs today. Here is are some of the most well-known.

Father Fred's Ghost

One of the oldest legends at Fort Leavenworth is Father Fred's Ghost. The story begins with the original St Ignasius Chapel, built in the 1870's, it was located at 632 Thomas Avenue. In 1875 the Chapel and Rectory burned to the ground. A young priest died in that fire. Many of the building materials from this original chapel were salvaged and used in the building of the new Chapel that is now located at McClellan and Pope Avenues.

In the house at 632 Thomas Avenue, some of the original bricks from the Chapel, were used to build the fireplace in the dining room, and some of these had names carved into them, including the name of Father Fred. It has been reported that there is a young priest in Jesuit robes who has been seen walking up and down the stairs from the attic room. continued

The Legend of Catherine Sutler

The ghost of Catherine Sutler is one of the best known legends of Fort Leavenworth. She is often seen wandering the post calling out the names of her 2 lost children, Ethan and Mary.

On their way to what was to become their future home in the Oregon Territory in 1880, Hiram and Catherine Sutler, and their 2 children, Ethan and Mary, stopped to stay with family they had at the Fort. One morning the children were sent to collect firewood, driftwood was plentiful atound the banks of the Missouri and they were cautioned not to go too near the water because it could be very treacherous. The children went to do their task, but did not return. Their worried parents along with neighbors continued

The Rookery

The Rookery at 14 Sumner at Fort Leavenworth was built in 1832 and is the oldest house in Kansas to be continously occupied as a residence. From all reports this is a location that is full of ghosts. The most terrifying of these is a woman with long, disheveled hair who runs screaming at people with her long white gown flying behind her. No one really knows any historical facts that would explain her presence but fierceness of her rage and the aggressiveness with which she rushes at people suggest that she may have suffered some sort of horrible violence. continued

Haunted Kansas Locations - Lawrence

Here's a little history to go along with some of the places we heard about on the tour as well as some other reportedly haunted locations in Lawrence:

I found this link about some of the history and hauntings of the
Eldridge Hotel. From the website -"The fifth floor is said to contain a portal to the spirit world – especially room 506. In this room witnesses have reported breath marks on recently cleaned mirrors, doors opening and shutting on their own, and lights turning on and off by themselves.
Others report cold spots throughout the old hotel. Some guests have even encountered apparitions on the fifth floor and an “elevator ghost” likes to open and close the elevator doors on the fifth floor. Several photographers have also mentioned having inexplicable technical difficulties with their cameras when near the elevator."

Stull Cemetary

Located about 10 miles out of Lawrence some have theorized that this cemetary may "be a gateway to Hell". Interesting to read about but don't plan on paying a visit - trespassers are not welome there!

The Many Levels of Interest in the Paranormal Community - Where do you fit in?

There are so many different levels of interest in the Paranormal Community, and each plays a vital role in the community as a whole. When we try to define what our community is, and what we are trying to do… it is a little challenging. What are we?

Seekers, Scholars, Adventurers, Investigators, and Researchers.

I think of those on the first level of interest as the “Seekers”

It’s the level where we all begin our journey into understanding more about the Paranormal. Whether it’s due to personal experiences, or curiosity, they want to learn more. The quest has begun and all media comes into play; whether it’s watching Ghost Hunters on television, reading a book, or reaching out on the information highway; exploration begins.

They learn a lot of history, and also about many of the theories and concepts of paranormal activity, and enjoy touring historically haunted locations. As for their place in the Paranormal Community, “the seekers” are some of the most important members! They are an invaluable resource for information on purported activity for their local areas, and often help paranormal teams to identify hot spots that were previously unknown.

“Scholars”

Once they begin learning, they just can’t get enough! They burn through all the available material they can get their hands on, and reach out to other interested people to discuss it all with. They begin to explore the possibilities and develop their own opinions of what they consider to be valid.

Eventually scholars come to a point where reading is not enough, it is time to venture out and find their place in the scheme of things, almost everyone who gets to this point will want to at least try investigating, which, leads us to the next level of course!

“Adventurers”

In the beginning the draw to investigating is often the thrill of possibly encountering the paranormal, like the feeling we get when figuring out the answer to a good mystery, or solving a crime. The challenge and adrenalin rush, is exciting to be sure! And you know what, there’s nothing wrong with that! Just hopefully, the investigation is in the company of an already experienced group of investigators, so that there is some guidance and advice available for the new investigator.

“Investigators and Researchers”

Although they are sometimes separate pursuits, most investigators I’ve met are also researchers. Looking for commonalities in Paranormal Activity, seeking to find the common denominators and explanations wherever possible, and documenting their findings for reference; while refining and developing new techniques.

I have enjoyed my experiences at each of these levels and look forward to whatever comes next in my journey! Whatever your level of interest is, I welcome you to share your journey here on these pages.

The "Mrs Bubs" Investigation March 2009

Our first priority is to help families, so when we got an investigation request that involved a family experiencing odd activity at their home and found out that the center of that activity seemed to revolve around one of it’s youngest members, we set out immediately to help them.

When we go into an investigation it is with an open mind and a watchful eye. We pay attention to the details, and debunk whatever may have a possible, logical explanation, before we say that something is paranormal. If we are left with activity that we cannot find a logical or natural explanation for, then we have to allow that it may be paranormal. If activity is found, we are there to help the family with validation, support, and hopefully to help give them a better understanding about what they are experiencing and the best ways to cope with it.

We had our reveal with our clients on the Mrs Bubs Investigation this past weekend and they graciously gave us permission to post about the experiences and evidence we gathered over the course of two investigations we conducted in their home.

To protect the family we will not be disclosing the exact location of the home, or their names, but we will tell you that the home is in Leavenworth and that we are still researching the history of the house itself, which we will update when we can. That being said, here is the story of the investigation we call "Mrs Bubs"......
